Sri Arunagirinathar was a great Tamil saint, poet, and devotee of Lord Murugan who lived during the 15th century in Thiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu.
In his early life, Arunagirinathar was known for living a worldly and pleasure-filled life. He wasted his wealth and health, which brought great sorrow to his sister, who loved him deeply. One day, realizing his mistakes and feeling the pain he caused his sister, he decided to end his life by jumping from the Thiruvannamalai temple tower.
But at that very moment, Lord Murugan appeared before him, saved him, and granted him divine grace. The Lord blessed him with spiritual wisdom and commanded him to spread devotion through songs.
From that day, Arunagirinathar became a transformed soul. He travelled across many temples singing divine hymns in praise of Lord Murugan, which later became the famous Tiruppugazh (“Songs of Divine Glory”). His verses are filled with devotion, rhythm, and spiritual depth.
Arunagirinathar’s life teaches us that no matter how far one goes astray, true repentance and divine grace can transform anyone into a saint.
